This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
